The Chilik river is the left-hand inflow of the Ili river, and runs in the southern part of the Almaty region between two ranges of the northern Tien-Shen - Zaili and Kungei Alatau. The general area of its basin is 50-53 square kilometers, the length is 240 kilometers. A considerable portion of the river runs through the high mountains. At the beginning, the river flows east, then swirls north. The general fall of the river is 3500 meters (3000 in the mountain part). From source to the output from then mountains it receives more than 70 runs. Below, water is lost on a filtration and is distributed for irrigation. In the middle of the mountains Chilik changes its direction to meridional. Here, the river having cut Toraigyr and Sogatty ranges further deviates northwest, and leaves on submontane flatness. The average discharge of water when coming out of the mountains is 32 m cubes per one second. The run-off of water by months is rather balanced. The temperature of the water on the average flow is 6-8 degrees celsius. Mean slope of the river is 22 meters on 1 kilometer.
